STATEMENT

My work is inspired by the anonymous artisans of the middle ages.  As a child I first encountered the Byzantine style in my grandparents’ orthodox church.  Banners, icons and paintings adorned every surface.  Art was an integral part of life at home as well.  My artist-mother constantly provided opportunities to explore new materials.  She also introduced me to museums.  I was entranced by the rich patterns, detailed stories and combinations of media in medieval art.  The meticulous attention to detail and the skill required to execute these works enthralled me.  I was particularly fascinated by the reliquaries, beautiful cases with special compartments for bone fragments and other interesting bits.

In my mixed media pieces I emulate the textures, details, and rich colors of medieval art.   My embroideries are reminiscent of manuscript paintings, using cotton and metallic threads in place of paint and gold leaf.

My handbuilt ceramic frames are filled with figures and textures inspired by the sculpture and architecture of the period. Frequently with niches for relics of a modern world.

I increasingly find other materials creeping into my work, adding to the mix of texture and color.  Like my predecessors, I try to tell a story, usually with a humorous twist.

A broader selection of work can be found on my website. I also welcome commissions. Perhaps you have a story to tell or a relic that needs a shrine of its’ own.
