STATEMENT

Mary Zicafoose's interest in textiles began as a young child, triggered by a tiny scrap of Malaysian Ikat fabric she received from her favorite aunt. The cloth was dyed and woven with enough exotic detail and subtle mystery to inspire a successful career as a tapestry and rug weaver.

"After formative years in Art school and Art teaching," Zicafoose says, " I found myself seated behind a loom. It is here I have spent two decades in pursuit of visual surprise on the flat woven surface, creating detail, mystery and illusion in cloth. Weaving has been my passport to the world, my ticket into the history and evolution of civilizations and their art and artifacts."

Zicafoose's unabashedly colorful weavings have been included in the art collections of United States Ambassadors on four continents. She has tapestries currently installed in the U.S. Embassies in Bangkok, Thailand, Vilnius, Lithuania and Baku, Azerbaijan, countries esteemed for their rich textile traditions.

Each of Zicafoose's tapestries and rugs are custom designed, dyed and woven in her Nebraska studio. She works extensively on individual commissions, creating unique art textiles for both corporate and residential spaces. These ethno-contemporary pieces are woven of time tested classic materials, fine 100% wool on a Finnish linen warp. They are dyed to harmonize with the client's interior colors, and are sized, finished and mounted professionally for wall display or floor use.

Additional images of Mary Zicafoose's tapestries and rugs can be seen in the Fiber Arts Design Book V and VI, and The Guild Design Book #9, #12 and #13. The Smithsonian Magazine, The Washington Post, Southwest Arts Magazine, Handwoven Magazine and Fiberarts Magazine have featured Zicafoose's tapestries and rugs. She is also a frequent exhibitor in The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, The Smithsonian Craft Show, and the American Craft Council Shows in Baltimore, St. Paul and San Francisco, as well as in numerous galleries and exhibitions throughout the United States.

"Besides being powerful visual statements," Zicafoose says, "my work is designed and woven to inspire the senses. The people who own my rugs are drawn to the frequency, the vitality, the presence they seem to hold. I have received some very moving and beautiful letters from clients who have walked through the doorways my weavings inspired."
