"Whatever you can do, or think you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius,
power, magic in it."
Goethe
My central
focus is the manipulation of the fabric plane: removing fabric from its ordinary
realm of reference as garment, covering or container into the realm of a sculptural
element.
One of
my primary concerns is the transformation of the two-dimensional surface of the
fabric plane into the actuality and/or the illusion of three dimensions. Stitched
or folded lines change the viewer’s perception of the fabric surface. Simple
geometric forms created by line seem to alternately advance and recede.
The dimensionality
of color is explored using monochromatic gradations juxtaposed with complementary
accents.
The total effect
of the color is never experienced all at once or by itself; rather, flecks of
color are caught in the light from each angle of viewing. Form and color work
simultaneously in creating light and shadow.
My response
to my own “ordering” instinct results in structures that are fairly
tightly controlled, repeated forms which exhibit a certain mathematical quality.
The ordering point is form, which serves as a vehicle for the relationship between
line, space and color within each piece.
