STATEMENT

Kathy Weaver was born in Sunbury, PA, near Pennsylvania Dutch country. Her family later moved to Columbus, Indiana, renowned for its architecture. She now resides with her husband in a suburb north of Chicago.

Trained as a painter, Kathy actively practiced her art while raising a family and having a career teaching art in the public schools. Her paintings were of a political nature and involved issues of apartheid, feminism, and anti-militarism. In 1988 she gravitated to the medium of fabric as a way to engage a larger audience to view the message of her works.

An example of her early fiber work is a series of three quilts, "Guns are Us" portraying the number of children killed by violence in Chicago in one year. These quilts are in the collection of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.

A later and continuing body of work involves issues of technology in the form of the robot. In order to render the mechanistic surfaces for the robot, Kathy employed the airbrush as a painting tool. The incongruity of soft painted satin for hard objects provides an element of humor to the work. Kathy completed a larger-than-life series of seven Cyborg Females, each 94" x 54." She is now working on a new series, Robo Sapiens, and has completed Robo Sapiens, Agents 1- 5, each of which is about 45" x 45" in size.

Her worldwide travel, her interest in popular art, comic books and, in particular, the daily contact with children's artwork has been her prime resources and inspiration.

The artist has recently built a new studio, is retired after 34 years of teaching and is enjoying long days of work on multiple projects.

In the past two years Kathy has exhibited around the country and abroad:
