STATEMENT

I design and weave hand dyed, hand woven wool textiles. I weave in the Swedish ripsmatta technique with an 8-harness weaving loom. I have altered this weave to achieve greater depths of dimension and interest in my finished pieces. I begin by stretching out 40 feet of white wool yarn that is kept in a very orderly fashion. I create my own colors of dye to obtain the tones and shades desired. I use sponges to literally “push” dyes into the wool by hand so that my colors gradually blend and meld into each other. Using the basic color wheel theory, I am able to move from one color to the next. By keeping my wool strands in a straight and parallel manner, I can create vastness as in land to sea to sky and add dimension. After the wool is dry, it is steam set and ready to be threaded onto a floor loom.

I use subtle shifting gradations of color that are interpretive representations of natural phenomena. My work, flat or 3-dimensional, measures roughly three feet by seven feet; all are one of a kind. I can create any size of wall covering by using multiple pieces; an arranged application is secured with French cleats. They can be applied to any wall surface.
