STATEMENT

I make non-traditional quilts. Each piece is an original work even when replicating a particular design because I respond to the materials on hand. The geometry of the design structures the work and the process allows each piece to evolve in its' own way. The work is improvisational in nature with no two pieces exactly the same size.

The ideas for my quilts come from many sources; from things that I have read, poetry, places that I have been, the natural world, even dreams. Most of the sewing is done on an industrial machine. I collect fabric and buy it wherever I go. Both new and vintage fabric is incorporated into the quilts. The older material brings a history to the process and to the work.

I am most strongly influenced by African American strip quilts. Their unpredictable design elements and their fearless use of color and pattern have inspired me. I am indebted to the thousands of anonymous quilt makers whose work I have enjoyed and whose efforts have informed my own process.
