Floorcloths
are decoratively painted fabric used as an area rug or carpet. The popularity
of the floorcloth in America began in colonial times with the work of
local craftspeople imitating designs of table coverings and woven carpets.
These were often painted, stamped, and stenciled on discarded canvas
from worn ships' sails. The craft wained as the country began to manufacture
woven rugs and has been revived by contemporary artists using durable,
high tech materials.
The
floorcloth creations of Alan Vaughn feature contemporary designs and
materials built on a centuries old tradition blending practicality and
beauty. They bring warmth and distinction to any room. Like their ancestors,
they are durable, easily cleaned, and are at home on the floor or wall.
Each
floorcloth is hand painted and signed by the artist on heavy cotton
canvas. The painted surface is protected with several coats of an extremely
tough, waterproof, and flexible sealer. The back of the floorcloth has
a non-slip, natural latex rubber coating and is moisture resistant.
These hardworking floorcloths are low maintenance and will perform well
in virtually any environment.
