I create visually abstract wall art using only the cotton fabrics that I paint or print myself. Most of my work falls into the realm of art quilts, but I also create lightweight, stitched and assembled wall pieces. I'm happiest with a brush in my hand, and fiber art allows me a large-scale, exuberant canvas. I prefer creating larger pieces to working small.
My heritage includes German Expressionism. I was originally trained as a printmaker and find the scale of American Abstract Expressionist paintings thrilling. To me, successful art works in any medium are a balance of complex forms. I juxtapose active forms with quiet, inward ones, motion with stillness. In music, the silence between notes is just as important as the notes themselves. Although abstract, my work constantly mines the process of daily life and the natural world.
